[ OVERVIEW ]After a successful launch in the International Year of Sustainable Tourism Development in March 2017, Ibex Expeditions has pledged to promote Antarctica as a destination, but to do it responsibly and get participants to become Ambassadors of the #AntarcticaMatters movement. This is done by creating an awareness campaign of its fragility and the need to help maintain the Antarctic Treaty as status quo.
[ HIGHLIGHTS ]
The initiative will be taken forward under the #Antarcticamatters campaign, with pro bono legal support committed by Luthra and Luthra Law Offices and AZB & Partners. The Antarctic Treaty System, which governs the region, is expected to come up for review and potential renegotiation in 2048.
As part of the journey, responsible citizens from diverse backgrounds who travelled with Ibex Expeditions took a collective pledge to protect Antarctica. This symbolic commitment was made by holding a bottle of melted Antarctic ice, in the presence of Jonathan Shackleton, cousin of legendary explorer Ernest Shackleton.
“Antarctica Matters – A Journey with a Purpose” reflects this ongoing effort to build awareness and long-term stewardship for one of the planet’s most fragile environments.
