India's
rich tropical forests have over 1200 species of birds
and 350 mammals, preserved in different regions of the
country within 59 National Parks and 372 sanctuaries.
The exotic areas are Ranthambhore (Rajasthan), Corbett
(Uttar Pradesh), Gir (Gujarat), Kanha and Bandhavgarh
(Madhya Pradesh), Periyar (Kerala) and Kaziranga (Assam).
Walking softly, this tiger may
be just curious about something new on the edge
of the woods or it may be stalking its prey. His
target may be some distance away in the sparse
undergrowth. As dusk deepens, he moves out of
concealment to the edge of the lake. Here the
last golden glow of the sky is reflected. Perhaps
the deer are on the other shore. The Tiger is
on the prowl.
Corbett
is India's oldest park established in 1936 and named
after the legendary hunter-naturalist and one of India's
first conservationist, Jim Corbett. Unlike Africa, the
forest is thicker and game more spread out, thus animals
must be searched for, as if one is on a hunting safari.
Enjoy
the excitement of the
roar of `Shere Khan, the tiger, the danger
calls of monkeys, in the vicinity of `Haathi,
the Elephant.
Set
against the back drop of the Ranthambhore Fort, in Rajasthan,
the 400 sq km Sawai Madhopur reserve is amongst the
11 Tiger Reserves of the country and is a naturalist's
delight.
Kanha,
is located in a horseshoe valley with two distinctive
hills on either side, deep in central Madhya Pradesh. Living
in the park are Tigers and Leopards along with
sambar deer, blue bull, antelope, barking deer,
and others. Safaris can also visit the nearby
Bandhavgarh National Park, where one travels on
elephant-back and jeeps continuing the search
for tiger and its prey.
In
South India, in Periyar and Nagarhole, wild life
is viewed by boat and the animals inhabiting this
area include elephants, deer, tiger, panther,
leopard, bison, monkeys, and the malabar squirrel. The
other game parks worth visiting are Bandipur,
Muddumalai.
The
Ibex Expeditions wild life safaris have seasoned Naturalists
taking you to special spots in Game parks. You stay
in old hunting lodges or eco friendly resorts. Days
are spent with early morning and late afternoon game
park rides that are on jeeps or elephant back and occasionally,
on a boat.
On
many game parks, Ibex links in with NGOs
like the Ranthambhore Foundation and the Corbett
Foundation to support their cause of rehabilitating
the local inhabitants to boost their alternative
sources of income by purchasing their handicrafts,
paintings, and occasional donations, thus offering
a reason not to poach but protect our wild life
in the true principles of Wildlife eco tourism.
